Canning Party In The USA

On this episode we made some homemade salsa from our tomatoes from our urban garden. We had a canning party with three generations of family members. If you like to can have a canning party with family and friends it makes the process easier and fun. The kids cut up the tomatoes and onions with a vidalia chopper. I and grandpa did all the un-kid friendly duties. The recipe that we used is below.

8 Cups Tomatoes, Peeled, Chopped and drained
2 1/2 Cups onions, Chopped
10 Jalapeno Peppers
6 Garlic Cloves, Minced
2 Teaspoons Cumin
2 Teaspoons Black Pepper
2 Tablespoons Canning Salt
1/3 Cup Sugar
1/3 Cup Vinegar

1. Mix all together and bring to boil for 10 minutes.
2. Seal in jars and cook in hot water for 10 minutes.
3. Yields about 5 pints.
4. Enjoy

Plant Identification Challenge – Garden Update With A Twist

Aiden and I took the ultimate garden challenge. The challenge was to correctly identify the plants growing in our greenhouse. If Aiden gets a 80% or higher he gets to put a pie in my face, if he loses however I get to throw one in his face.

Well he did great and got a lot right but not enough. I think his nerves got to him cause he was so close and was not firing on all cylinders during the challenge. The results still were the same. Also he was a big fan of Dr. Who so we used his sonic screw driver as the official buzzer. And Zoe was the official score keeper.

A chat with a Master Gardener – Gardening Interview

Today the crew went out and helped Copasetic Kid work on his new knife shop and got to meet a River Valley Master Gardener, Bob Watson. We got to learn the basics of any new gardener and what you have to do to become a Master Gardener. Bob is 5 year veteran of the program. He talked to me off camera about all kinds of great information to use in my up coming garden this season. If you live in Arkansas you need lime in your soil.

Vegitate Goes To The Lawn and Garden Show

The vegitate crew took an adventure in garden heaven at the lawn and garden show in Fort Smith, Arkansas, hosted by the River Valley Master Gardners. We visited every booth and did every outdoor activity available. The kids learned a lot and I got signed up for information about becoming a master gardener. We even got to speak with the guy from our local hydroponics store we love the place.
During the filming of the scene around the water fall a photographer took the kids page and you can find it the local paper here.
